What to do if someone is camera shy.

"I don't like working in front of a camera." -Laurie Metcalf

What do you do when your model/subject is camera shy?

The most common reason of why people are camera shy towards photographers is as simple as they don't particularly know you. Here is a few steps to help make your model/subject a little more comfortable being in front of the camera.

1. Ask questions. Get to know the person and establish a relationship.

2. Compliment the model/subject. Make them feel really good about themselves.

3. Be specific about poses. Tell them the pose you want, show them how to do it and guide them.

4. As you are taking the photos, show them some of the photos during breaks. Give them a little "sneak peek."

5. Take some candid photos. Maybe when something made them laugh, or when they aren't necessarily paying attention. When those photos come out good, they really start to feel good about being the subject of a photo. Tell them to do a pose "as a joke" and tell them to "have fun with it."
